Step 1 – Start Online at Dansk Sprogskole (A0–A2 Beginner Danish)

You begin with the fundamentals of beginner Danish:

  • Pronunciation and vocabulary
  • Everyday conversations
  • Simple texts
  • Basic grammar

Teaching is online, flexible and voluntary.

You can study in the evenings, on weekends, or whenever it fits your schedule.

Alongside the lessons, you have access to exercises, assignments and training materials on the platform, so you can continue progressing independently.

If you live abroad or do not yet have a Danish CPR number, you can start learning Danish online before moving to Denmark.

Dansk Sprogskole offers supplementary training and preparation at beginner levels.
Screening, placement, official teaching and certification are carried out exclusively by public educational institutions.

All A0–A2 content at Dansk Sprogskole is 100% free.

Step 2 – FVU (Preparatory Adult Education) – Free Public Danish Education (B1–B2)

Once you have residence in Denmark and a CPR number, you can register for a screening with a public provider of FVU, including for example:

  • Kolding HF & VUC
  • HF & VUC Vest (Esbjerg)

FVU is a public adult education programme regulated by Danish legislation.

Screening, placement, teaching and documentation are conducted by the public institution.

Teaching takes place live online and is available to adults throughout Denmark.

FVU strengthens your Danish toward B1–B2 level and provides official progression within the Danish education system.

FVU is free of charge and requires residence in Denmark and a CPR number.

Step 3 – AVU and HF (Upper Secondary Danish Level – B2+/C1)

If you wish to continue your Danish language education, you can take:

  • AVU (General Adult Education)
  • HF

HF Danish A is at upper secondary level and corresponds approximately to B2+/C1 level in Danish.

This means you can achieve upper secondary Danish qualifications with official documentation – while continuing to work or study.

Teaching continues online and is relevant for adults across Denmark.

AVU and HF require a participation fee (typically 100–500 DKK per subject).
They require residence in Denmark and a CPR number.

Danish Language Programmes and Public Adult Education in Denmark – DU1, DU2, DU3, FVU, AVU and HF

In Denmark, Danish language courses are offered through several public education schemes, including the Danish Education Programmes (DU1, DU2 and DU3) as well as FVU, AVU and HF.

If you are entitled to Danish education under the Danish Education Act, the municipality assigns you to DU1, DU2 or DU3.

FVU, AVU and HF are independent public adult education programmes with their own admission criteria and target groups.

Dansk Sprogskole does not carry out official placement and does not provide official Danish education programmes.

Official Documentation and PD Exams in Denmark

FVU, AVU and HF conclude with official exams and certificates issued by HF & VUC.

Prøve i Dansk 2 (PD2) and Prøve i Dansk 3 (PD3) are part of the Danish Education Programmes and are conducted at approved language centres in Denmark.

PD exams are often required in connection with residence permits, permanent residency and Danish citizenship in Denmark.

If you need PD2 or PD3, you can contact a language centre for level assessment and registration. This typically makes sense once you have reached a stable B2 level in Danish.
