Danish levels A0 to C1: find your next step
Dansk Sprogskole offers free online Danish learning materials from A0 to B2. This guide explains the levels and possible next steps in Danish education. You can begin without a Danish CPR number and study from Denmark or abroad.

What do A0, A1, A2, B1, B2 and C1 mean?
A1–C1 are levels in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). A0 is our practical label for a complete beginner. Your reading, listening, speaking and writing may be at different levels.

These are brief explanations of the Council of Europe's language levels, not an assessment or certificate.
Choose where to start
If Danish is new to you, start with A0. If you know the basics, explore A1 or A2. For further practice, see B1 and B2. Review the course topics and begin where you can practise comfortably while still learning something new.

Learn Danish before moving to Denmark
You can create a free account while living abroad, without a CPR number or payment. Begin with the sounds and everyday language you will meet in the courses. Choose a regular study time and practise speaking as well as reading and listening. When considering live classes, check the class times and your time zone before registering.
FVU: have your next step assessed
FVU is preparatory adult education. FVU-dansk works with basic reading, spelling and writing; FVU-start helps adults with Danish as a second language prepare for further FVU learning.
Admission depends on an individual assessment. Completing one of our courses does not automatically qualify you for FVU. In our cooperation with HF & VUC, the educational institution handles official assessment, admission, teaching and documentation.

Further education and advanced Danish
Working towards C1 requires continued practice across reading, listening, speaking and writing. AVU and HF may be relevant if your goal also includes further education. Ask HF & VUC about suitable subjects, admission, teaching format and any participation fees.
FVU stages, AVU and HF subjects have their own objectives. They are not interchangeable with CEFR levels, and there is no single sequence that suits every learner. Dansk Sprogskole provides A0–B2 learning materials; we do not offer an official C1 qualification.
Do you need an official Danish exam?
For Prøve i Dansk 2, Prøve i Dansk 3 or another official exam, contact the relevant exam provider about requirements and registration. Our materials can support your practice, but completing them is not an official exam certificate.
What is free, and who provides the teaching?
Dansk Sprogskole's learning materials and the live classes we offer are free. Further education at other institutions has its own admission conditions and any applicable fees.
